How I became a real

JUST a few words – delivered with a winning smile – set divorcee Debbie Bonfield’s heart aflutter. “My name is Marco,” announced the handsome Turkish gentleman across the counter of a jewellery shop in Marmaris. “Welcome to my store.” As the pair embarked on a holiday romance, Marco told single mum Debbie he owned an orange grove worth millions – and within weeks they were engaged. He gave her a huge diamond engageme

nt ring and proudly showed her the five-bedroom beachfront house which w

ould be their marital home. But now Debbie wants to warn other women after discovering Marco – real name Ergun Tulek – is a conman who tricked her out of 40,000. Debbie, 51, is the third British woman to b

e conned by Tulek and she says: “If any other woman sees Marco, or Ergun or whatever his bloody name is, I want th

em to slap his face VERY hard.” Debbie, who had been divorced for more than 20 years, fell love with Marco during a 10-day sunshine break. When she arrived home in May, Marco, 44, bombarded her with texts and calls until she flew back in June, accompanied by her daughter and granddaughter. But one night Debbie fell ill and Marco vanished. Debbie, from Cwmbran, Gwent, says: “Alarm bells should have rung, as he’d always be asking me for money. “He claimed he needed to help his brother who had debts and whose life was in danger. Marco’s money was tied up in property. When he showed me our beachfront home he said he didn’t have the keys with him. He

spun a fantasy life I bought into. I was in heaven. He treated me like a princess and I was so happy. “I felt finally life had gone my way – for so long I’d been a single mum struggling on my own. Now here was this handsome, charming, successful man who was madly in love with me. I felt like a real-life Shirley Valentine.” In the film, an unloved housewife has a holiday romance on a Greek island. But, unlike in the 1989 movie starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conti, there was to be no happy ending for Debbie. She says: “My daughter Tina came over with my granddaughter. We had a lovely time – apart from the fact Marco had no money. He would always be spending mine on jewellery which he said he would sell for a profit. I never saw any of it. “When it was time for my daughter to go back home, we sat up chatting on the last night. At about 1am I felt ill. Whe

n I woke up at 5am Tulek was gone and I was in agony. I felt as if I’d been poisoned. “At 8.30am he came back and gave me something to drink. I’m convinced he was trying to kill me. Then he vanished. My granddaughter’s pushchair and clothes had gone. So had all my jewellery. “All I had was a text saying he was in hospital with a damaged foot. “I went back to the jewellers in Marmaris where a colleague sighed, ‘Have you lent him money?’ My stomach dropped. I went to the police and showed the translator Marco’s picture. She told me his real name. “I tried to sell the engagement ring which he said was a f

our-carat diamond but I was told it was only worth 50. “He took 9,000 from me, maxed out my credit card for 15,000 and took thousands of pounds of jewellery.” Debbie’s daughter looked up Tulek on the internet and found he had conned two other British women. The Mirror told in 2006 how Tulek left Rosemary Worsley penniless and homeless after she gave him nearly 100,000 in 18 months. Rosemary, then 49, from Gtr Manchester, met Tulek in the same jewellers where he snared Debbie. Court officials told her he had seven children and was married to his third wife. In 2001, Valerie Bamping, then 48, lost 42,000 after Tulek proposed while she was visiting Marmaris. Debbie says: “It’s like Shirley Valentine gone horribly wrong. This man is a danger to women. I don’

t want him to be able to do this to anyone else. I’ve read about this happening to other women and I’ve thought they must have been foolish. Now I’m embarrassed to say I’m one

of those women. “I’ve made a fool of myself. But I won’t let him win. If I die trying, I’m going to bring this man to justice.”
